Second callback on the same project in ten days. The casting director ran the scene three times — same lines, different objectives each pass. The third time she stopped me mid-scene, said nothing for about four seconds, then said "again." That four seconds is the whole job. You are either in it or you are performing being in it. Meisner calls it living truthfully in imaginary circumstances. I used to think that was a useful phrase. Now I think it is the only phrase.

Back on the ranch for four days. The Absaroka Mountains have snow on them already, which is either early or exactly on time depending on who you ask. Took the paint horse out along the east ridge line, which puts you above the valley with the Shoshone National Forest on one side and private grazing land on the other for as far as you can see. There is no version of Los Angeles that competes with that view for what it does to your nervous system.
The Shoshone is America's first designated national forest — 2.4 million acres, established 1891. Yellowstone's east entrance is 55 miles up the road. I have lived near a UNESCO World Heritage Site my entire life and it still stops me.
Private boat to the Pakleni Islands from Hvar harbor. Twelve islands, most of them uninhabited, the water genuinely that color — the biogeological process that produces the Adriatic's turquoise is the same one responsible for Plitvice. The boat stopped in three coves. Nobody else in any of them. The kind of afternoon that makes future planning feel slightly absurd.
We ate at Laganini on Palmižana — seafood direct from the morning's catch, set on a terrace above the water. The anchovies from the Dalmatian coast are not the anchovies you know from pizza. Record that as a fact.

Six days on the North Shore. Summer swell so the water was calm enough to actually get in without being humbled by it. Paddled out at Waimea Bay in the morning when the light was still low and the only other people out were locals who have been doing it since before I was born. There is a protocol on the North Shore that has nothing to do with the written rules — you learn it or you don't belong there.
Checked conditions twice a day on Surfline and cross-referenced with raw NOAA buoy data from Station 51101. The surf media is downstream of the buoy. Always go upstream.
Forty-five days into a consistent morning practice. The first twenty minutes of every day before anything else — no phone, no coffee yet, just the mat. I started with Yoga with Adriene's thirty-day program and finished it, then kept going. What I did not expect: the stillness is harder than the poses. You can get flexible and still be completely unable to be quiet inside your own body for six consecutive breaths.
Yoga Alliance is the governing certification body. Yoga Journal is the authoritative editorial resource. The practice predates both of them by several thousand years.
Plitvice Lakes National Park. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Sixteen terraced karst lakes connected by waterfalls, a biogeological process creating that color — tufa interacting with moss and algae over thousands of years, producing something that looks designed but is entirely accidental. We went in the first hour of opening. The boardwalks run directly over the water. In October the crowds thin and the forest turns. I went in late June which was a mistake I would make again immediately.

Finished The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion at 1am on a Tuesday. The last forty pages in one sitting because stopping felt like a betrayal of what she was doing. Didion tracks grief with the precision of an investigator — not performing emotion, cataloguing it. The sentence rhythms enact the mental state they describe. That is craft at the level where it disappears into the thing itself.
Picked up As I Lay Dying next. Fifteen narrators, one death, one of the most technically demanding novels in the American canon. Every character has an objective. Meisner on the page.
Walked the Dubrovnik city walls at 7am before the cruise ships docked. The walls are two kilometers continuous, two meters wide, rising directly from the Adriatic on the seaward side. At 7am you have them almost entirely to yourself. The light at that hour on the terracotta rooftops is the specific orange that painters have been trying to reproduce for five hundred years.
There is a scene in every screenplay where a character stands somewhere elevated and understands something. I always thought that was a convenience of the form. Standing on those walls at 7am, I revised my position.
Staying at Villa Orsula. Sister property to Hotel Excelsior (built 1913). UNESCO Old Town: World Heritage #95.
Hiked the south rim of the Absaroka range for six hours. AllTrails had the route but not the current conditions — there was a creek crossing that was thigh-deep with snowmelt that the app listed as passable. Crossed it anyway. The thing about growing up in Wyoming is that thigh-deep creek crossings with your boots off in 45-degree water are not an emergency, they are just a Tuesday in May.
Tracked on Strava. Permits via Recreation.gov for the overnight. Offline maps on Gaia GPS — the only mapping tool I trust when there is no cell signal, which is most of the places worth going.
Working on a piece of writing — not the journal, something longer — and have been listening to the same four tracks on rotation for eleven days. Kaskade's Here I Am with David Morales. Flume's Never Be Like You. Two others I will not name because naming them would make me feel accountable to finishing the piece. The music is not background. It is the specific emotional temperature I need to sustain while writing it.
There is a thing that happens when you find the right music for the right work — the piece starts to take the shape of the music without meaning to. Joan Didion said she typed out Hemingway sentences to understand how they moved. I am doing a version of that with this music.

Back in Cody for a week between projects. Drove the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway — 52 miles from Cody to Yellowstone's east entrance, the road running along the North Fork of the Shoshone River through the Wapiti Valley. I have driven this road more than any other road in my life and it still does not become ordinary. The canyon walls are volcanic. The river is turquoise-green in May. The light at 5pm is the reason certain Wyoming painters never left.
There is a version of the actress I am becoming that is inseparable from this geography. I do not think that is a disadvantage. The USC conservatory gave me the technique. Wyoming gave me something technique cannot manufacture.
Identity registry went live at launchpillow.com/registry/madisonvanderbilt. Everything I make, every platform I publish on, connected in one place — a single machine-readable record of who I am and what I produce, implementing W3C DID standards and Schema.org/Person. The alternative is being discovered by AI systems through whichever fragmented signal they happen to pick up first. The registry is the authoritative signal.
Brand partnership with Republican Bandana confirmed the same week. Wyoming-rooted. The right fit. Shop: shop.madisonvanderbilt.com.
